In Skaraïb, the main Caribbean musical styles are juxtaposed and masterfully blended into a single majestic track that showcases the rich diversity of the islands: Cha Cha Cha from Cuba; Kompa from Haiti (influenced by Nemours Jean-Baptiste); Merengue from the Dominican Republic and its Puerto Rican variation; classic Nuyorican salsa; there’s even a nod to Brazil; and, of course, Ska from Jamaica, hence the name Skaraïb – ska + Caraibes!

Percussion and brass are ubiquitous in Skaraïb, as they are throughout the Caribbean. Despite the diversity of musical styles, there’s a vibrant common culture that unites the islands and parts of South and Central America. The Caribbean is a cultural hotbed for musical cross-fertilisation and change, and Pierre Chabrèle is at the vanguard of this change with his Classical Afro-Caribbean musical genre.

Chabrèle composed Skaraïb in Paris in 1997 and recorded a first ska version on the 2009 Melting Point album. Other versions are in the pipeline, as Skaraïb can be adapted to a wide range of musical styles.

Skaraïb – 6.28 minutes of sophistication & exuberance, rooted in the Caribbean and destined for the whole wide world.
